The Importance of Microchipping

Microchipping a pet is one of those things that should be second nature for a pet owner but often ends up on the list of things they will get to eventually. Of course, that "eventually" can quickly turn into never. It is essential that you microchip your pet and register the chip with your contact information. If you don't, you could lose your pet forever, and that is not an exaggeration. Our veterinarians at Confederate Ridge Animal Hospital in Fredricksburg offer microchipping services and so much more.

What Do You Mean, Lose My Pet Forever?

Pets get out. They get lost, they run away, and they let their curiosity take them far away from home. If your pet is microchipped and turned over to a local veterinarian or animal shelter, the chip can be scanned and you will be contacted shortly. The microchip lies just under the skin of the animal and inserting it takes only a minute. The chip needs to be registered with your contact information and updated as needed when you change your address or phone number. Changing this information is easy and free to do online.

Veterinarians have scanners to check animals for microchips. If we locate the chip with your contact info, we can call you, and you can retrieve your pet. Collars are great and useful for tracking down a pet’s owner but they are not perfect and can fall off. A microchip greatly increases the odds of being reunited with your furry friend. People also steal pets. If there is a dispute where you are sure that someone else has your pet, a microchip with your contact information can prove your ownership of the animal. The microchip is roughly the size of a grain of rice and lasts for the life of your pet.
